Push Through the Weight-Loss Plateaus: Set Point Genes

Whoever invented the idea of a healthy lifestyle became intimately familiar with weight-loss plateaus. I used to get upset when my weight loss stalled, but now I laugh to myself and think about how I'm going to turn the scale into my little bitch.

Weight loss plateaus teach us patience. We are reminded that we don't control everything as it relates to our bodies. At the same time, understanding the science behind plateaus and body set points brings a level of comfort. Also, we now have access to important research about genetic sequence variants associated with measures of obesity.

Why our weight loss stalls

One of the main reasons we don't see the scale move is because muscle weighs more than fat. If we are doing everything right, we should notice our body shrink as we burn fat and build muscle.

But that's only part of the equation. Our bodies have a natural set point that changes throughout time if we go to one extreme or the other. By accepting plateaus and continuing the good habits, we give our bodies a chance to accept the fact that everything is going to be O.K.
